Circle of Life is a ring shaped light sculpture, inspired by the Moebiusring. It is the embodiment of the reciprocal interaction of life, as the City is a materialized representation of social interactions. The three sides of the ring are part of a continuous surface akin the structure of the moebius, making a 3 dimensional shape out of 1 continuous surface. A circle in a circle, mimicking life as a continuous movement, reciprocal and circular in nature.
The ring’s play of endless waves of light is influenced by pedestrians in their use of the urban space. Each passing generates a unique wave of color and marks a moment of crossing. Various waves of prior passings mix to new unique colors, mimicking social encounters. Placed around a pedestrian crossing it is a physical symbol of social interaction and an urban manifestation of the ‘rite the passage’.
Circle of Life Utrecht is a remake of Circle of Life 2024, which has been on display in Amsterdam and Norrkoping. It has a lightweight Aluminum truss core making it easy to set up and transport.
